What You Will Learn in an MSW MBA Dual Degree Programs?

About the same amount of time is spent on business administration and social work concepts in MSW/MBA dual degree program. Both areas of study affect each other, so many of the business ideas a student learns will apply to social work goals and objectives and vice versa.

Instead of focusing on people, some social work ideas may stress leadership or business management.

Here are some examples of what you might learn in an MSW/MBA dual degree program.

  • Many programmes will teach you how to be good at the management functions of accounting, finance, marketing, and managing human resources. All of these are needed to run a large organisation, especially one that helps people or does social work.
  • Most of the time, these programmes will focus on giving people the skills and knowledge they need to lead an organisation strategically, especially through their team members and subordinates. In their MBA programme, the University of Pittsburgh puts a lot of emphasis on cooperation and working as a team.
  • The MSW part of the programme will have a lot of classes about the ethics and practises of social work. This will help the student learn which socialpracticesctises and ideas are worth using in a given management situation.
  • Many MSW/MBA dual degree programmes teach students how to understand complex organisations by teaching them about management principles, how to make good decisions, and how to be a good manager.
  • Most programmes also include a practicum component. The MSW in particular requires at least a few dozen hours of clinical practice, which can be done at the university hosting the programme or at a local clinic if the student is taking an online programme.
  • Some programmes that lead to two degrees also require internships or business hours to earn an MBA.

By the end of one of these programmes, a student should know everything there is to know about both MBA and administrative social work.

Note that some programmes let students make their schedules of classes so that they can better fit their own needs and career goals. The University of Pennsylvania has one of these programmes, but it’s very hard to get into because students have to fill out separate applications for their schools of social work and business administration.

Online MSW/MBA Dual Degree Programs

Due to the popularity of online learning, there are more and more online MSW/MBA dual degree programmes. These programmes will have the same level of academic challenge and variety as on-campus or in-person programmes, but students will often be able to move through them at a slower pace.

Most of the time, these kinds of programmes can be done part-time. This lets students take care of other responsibilities or work while they go to school.

Some MSW/MBA dual degree programmes, on the other hand, are “cohort-style,” which means that students are put into groups and go through the programme together. This gives the students a lot of chances to meet other professionals and make business connections.

All MSW online programmes require students to do their practical hours at a nearby clinic, which can be chosen during the admissions process.

How Much Is Tuition for an MSW/MBA Dual Degree Program?

Due to the number of credits needed, many MSW/MBA programmes can be very expensive. In general, programmes at smaller universities cost less, while programmes at larger universities cost more.

Most of the time, there are also more scholarship and internship opportunities at the bigger universities. The total cost of many programmes for two to three years of education is between $40,000 and $100,000.

The cost of tuition per credit can be very different. In general, when figuring out how much a programme will cost, students should think about the following:

  1. Credit costs: Total tuition will be most affected by how much each credit costs. So, the MBA part of the dual degree will account for most of the costs.
  2. School location: Schools in cities with a lot of people tend to be more expensive. But out-of-state students who go to school in another state often get their tuition lowered or a big discount.
  3. School size: Most of the time, bigger schools cost more than smaller ones.
  4. Online or in a classroom? Online programmes are often a little cheaper because out-of-state students can usually get a discount. But because of the clinical hour requirements, it is often easier to go to on-campus programmes for the MSW part of a dual degree programme.
  5. Full or part-time? Full-time programmes may be more expensive at first, but they may be less expensive in the long run because students can finish them faster. Students who have to pay per semester, on the other hand, often do better with part-time programmes.

Internships and Scholarships

All students who are getting both an MSW and an MBA should look for internships and scholarships whenever they can. Internships are common in MBA programmes, and they give students valuable business experience and can sometimes help them save money on tuition or even get it for free.

In general, students don’t get a stipend or salary from internships. Instead, they get their tuition costs directly taken off their bill. Scholarships are common in MSW departments, but they are also very common in MBA programmes.

Scholarships can help students save money or get rid of some or all of their tuition costs, so they should always look into them. You can find program-specific scholarships on the department pages of many college websites. States and other nonprofits also regularly offer more general scholarship opportunities.

Here are a few examples of scholarship awards:

  • New Hampshire residents who want to get an MSW can get help from the Alice M. Yarnold and Samuel Yarnold Scholarship Trust. It’s also open to students from other fields, though, so it’s very competitive.
  • The Verne LaMarr Lyons Memorial Scholarship is a unique scholarship for people who want to get their MSW and then work with African-American communities.
  • Students who want to work in human resources after getting their MBA can get a graduate degree scholarship from the Society for Human Resource Management.
  • The Association of Insurance Compliance Professionals Scholarship Program is a great option for MBA students because it is open to anyone studying insurance or a business-related field.
